Artist's statement
"Believe only half of what you see, and nothing of what you hear."
-Edgar Allan Poe
Photography has a reputation for being truthful. We as a society consider it the most accurate depiction of reality humans are capable of producing. Outside of blatant manipulation or claims to represent the impossible, we rarely deign to question it.
Furthermore, as fallen humans with an overabundance of self-assuredness, we hold our vision in very high regard. We so often define truth (sometimes on principle and sometimes by force of habit) by what we can see. And now that the camera has allowed us to see more than ever before, it follows that we must be more correct about life and the universe than we have ever been.
Or are we?
This work explores our expectations of photography to be representational and the limitations of our ability to see. I want to question our capabilities, and our qualifications, to make judgement calls on what does and doesn’t exist based on what we ourselves are able to sense, feel, or understand.
